Board Training


This training would be relevant for all existing and incoming local Board members to aid in understanding their roles and responsibility for area development, while furthering their understanding of the changing nature of economic development. 

Each community and Board is different and our process allows for customizing the approach to fit the needs of the individual community. The following is an outline of potential items covered in Smart Economic Development Board Training:

Introduction to Economic Development
  • Basic definitions and terminology
  • Changing nature of economic development
  • Your existing Economic Development Organization structure/approach

Role of Board Members

  • Understanding/Enhancing and working the organization mission
  • Setting personal goals/expectations
  • Selecting/Participating with committees

Strategy/Brand Development

  • Role of Board Member as Brand Manager and Lead Strategist

Planning Issues and Implementation 

  • Considering the Present/Contemplating the Future
  • Enlisting support of others
  • Keeping your plans vibrant

Administrative Issues

  • Assisting/Recruiting Staff

Process

This training, involving the entire local economic development Board, would include one-on-one consultation, if needed, with Board President/Chair and staff. It is envisioned that this training could be conducted in a single two to three hour session. 

The process could begin with an informational/background teleconference among economic development staff and partners to gain better understanding of the current and historic situation with the Board and community. This teleconference could also be used to finalize/customize the agenda and schedule a date for the training session. At this point it if not envisioned that the session will require any follow-up documentation. 

Costs

The cost of each training session would be $1,500, plus expenses.
